"DON'T JUST FLY, SOAR!" / DUMBO/ NO. 4 / 23rd FEBRUARY 2024

 Don't Just Fly, Soar!

Hey readers, while I was pondering what to write about, it occurred to me that we were discussing how we have become one with the crowd, in today's class.

The majority of us have enjoyed Disney films since we were very young. In addition to providing us, especially the kids, with entertainment, these characters occasionally make meaningful and insightful statements. One such remark that Dumbo made was,

"Don't just fly, soar!"

What distinguishes soaring from flying, exactly? It is incorrect for people to sometimes use these terms interchangeably. While soaring involves ascending higher and higher at a faster speed, flying is only moving through the air at a steady pace for the most part.

Most of us have something called as the "herd mentality". We want to be one with the crowd. We aimlessly follow the footsteps of the others without thinking through. All of us are wired differently. We have our own strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Dumbo has large ears, which made him stand out. The others criticized and sidelined him.

You are special because of your weaknesses and capabilities. These characteristics shape who you are. What really counts is how we stand out from the herd and act morally. It takes a lot of courage to attempt something new and to step out of our comfort zones. It's crucial to consider your options before following others' lead mindlessly.

It is the way many long-standing traditions and rituals are today. We never question anything. We follow it as a ritual without really understanding why. We no longer recognize the value of reflection and thought.

It is easier to just fly along with a flock of birds, without questioning the journey or the destination, because someone else is going to lead the way. They are going to take up the responsibility if something goes wrong. A lot of people in today's society, have adopted this mentality.

However, to take the initiate to move out of our comfort zones, ask questions, consider all the options and soar higher and higher like the eagles, demands strength. That being said, if we only do that, we will be able to rise beyond our shortcomings, our inadequacies, and everything else holding us back. There's a lot to learn from Dumbo. Is he really a Dumbo? I don't think so!

Let's not just fly with the flock, instead, soar beyond everything that presses us down!
