"LIVING IN THE LIVING SEASONS" - T. S. ELIOT / "EAST COKER' SERIES - 2 / NO.3 / FEBRUARY 22nd 2024

 Living In The Living

 Seasons!

("East Coker" Series -2)

Hey readers, here's another insightful quote from the man himself - T.S. Eliot. He uses simple words with profound meaning and philosophical ideas by structuring  them perfectly. In the second stanza of the poem, there's a beautiful line that says,

"Living with the living seasons"

I was immediately reminded of the "Book of Ecclesiastes" in The BibleIt states that everything has its proper timing and should occur at that moment. There will be a time for celebration if there is a time for grieving. In this temporary sojourn on Earth, nothing is permanent. The only way we can truly understand joy is if we experience suffering.

Today's society runs after "instant gratification" (the immediate desire to feel satisfied). We've all lost the value of patience. Everything is available at our fingertips. Ordering food is something we do, as soon as we feel like it. We are too fond of the word "instant". Whether it is instant deliveries or instant food or instant coffee. When we are reminded of something, we act on it right away. With all the new apps springing up, the world is at our fingertips. Everything is just a click away.

It is impossible for us to expect other areas of life to operate in the same way. We fix a fitness goal and we expect to achieve instant results. We overlook the time factor that everything requires. A decade ago, we had the patience to wait for something to happen. We observed the entire process and gladly acknowledged that everything takes time.

While explaining, the line "living with the living seasons", my professor used a beautiful illustration. She explained how seasonal fruits are available throughout the year. It wasn't the same, a few years ago. We had to wait until summer to taste certain delicacies like watermelon and mangoes. So many memories are attached to those fruits, just like the summer vacation does.

What a thought! Just to rapidly satiate our desires, we've destroyed something very special to us. We no longer associate watermelons and mangoes to summer vacations. We are always in a hurry running after something or the other. With all the instant 2 minutes noodles, and fast foods, we've become indifferent to patience.

We've forgotten, how it feels to enjoy something after a long wait. The feeling of receiving something, that we've been waiting to get for a long time. Those moments are the little pleasures of life. That joy is unmatched. We need to learn to give time to everything that requires it and relish the little pleasures of life!

Let's live with the living seasons!

Regards,

S. Jennifer Sandra
