"IN MY BEGINNING IS MY END!" - T. S. ELIOT / "EAST COKER" SERIES -1 / NO.2 / FEBRUARY 21st 2024

In My Beginning Is My End!

 ("East Coker" Series -1)

Hey readers, today, 21st February 2024, was a rewarding day as we had an insightful lecture on T.S. Eliot's poem, "East Coker".

The very first line of the poem,

"In my beginning is my end."

simply lingered in my thoughts. Eliot is a poet whose poems are extremely philosophical. The profundity of ideas that he presents in his works, moves the readers. Probing into the thought that the first line discusses, we can derive so many layers of meaning out of it.

We often glorify the magic of new beginnings. Every fresh start in life is something we rejoice inFor instance, a housewarming ceremony, a building's dedication, or the launch of a new store. Do we ever come to the realization that everything that starts eventually needs to end? We are  so focused in the moment and concerned about the journey that we forget its going to end.

When the sun rises, it definitely has to set. When the flower blooms, it will eventually dry. This can be termed as an universal fact. Pondering over this thought  can be encouraging and detrimental at the same time. Knowing that the beginning will end makes us more appreciative of the journey and careful about it. However, because it is coming to an end, we might also start to feel lethargic and complacent.

Eliot, gives a hope to the reader, by ending the poem with the line,

"In my end is my beginning."

There is always hope for a fresh start when anything ends. There's still hope for the sun to rise the following day, even after it sets. The Flower continues to bear fruit even after it dries. Every ending has a new beginning. We can still go forth on the new adventure while clinging to the incredible memories of the last one. With every ending comes fresh hope for the future.

Every beginning imprisons the end,  but with every end, a new beginning is born!

S. Jennifer Sandra
