MY FIRST PAPER PRESENTATION / NO.20 / 10th MARCH 2024

A Two-day International Conference on Social Sciences, Languages and Culture (ICSSLC '23)

Dear readers, This is my twentieth blog post. I am going to talk about my first-ever paper presentation experience to commemorate this milestone.

I sent my abstract to the Pondicherry University Conference to begin with. The abstract was chosen, but for a number of other reasons I was unable to present a paper there. At Crescent University in Chennai, I was delighted to have my abstract accepted for the Two-day International Conference on Social Sciences, Languages, and Culture.

I presented a paper titled - History Repeats Itself: A Comparative Reading of Select Poems Written During the Great Plague and Covid-19 Periods.

Here is the crux of the paper:

The objective of the paper, is to examine the similar experiences of people and their troubled psyche while deconstructing the irrevocable effects of trauma. Furthermore, investigating the similitudes and dissimilitudes of both these tragic events and re-reading the poems written during the Great Plague, without the context during the Covid-19 pandemic times with the formalist approach shapes the core of this paper. Five poems including: “A Litany in Time of Plague” by Thomas Nashe, “Triumph of death” by John Davies, “And People Stayed Home” by Kitty O’Meara, “When This Is Over” by Laura Kelly Fanucci and “Staying In” by Caroline Collingridge have been analyzed using a critical lens.

This paper is intriguing as it skillfully contrasts the two historical occurrences and examines the people's perspectives and experiences using the trauma theory lens.
The Department of English organized the conference, which was held on October 12 and 13, 2023, in collaboration with the Center for International Relations, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the School of Arabic and Islamic Studies.

We all presented our papers, and the audience was quite impressed. Although it was very disappointing that we were unable to attend the other events, such as seminars and panel discussions, it was an excellent opportunity to present a paper in front of such distinguished people.

We were unable to arrive at the designated time because we had our CAs (Internals) at that time. However, Dr. Rathna, the Head of the English Department, was kind enough to schedule an exclusive session on the 13th of October, 2023, just for us. From MCC, there were ten of us.

Our papers were published in the Conference Proceedings with ISBN.
The day was  very productive.

Regards,

S. Jennifer Sandra
